I love it! This reminds me of the science kits I used to get in the mail as a kid. But whimseybox is fabulously random, and there are no rules (unlike a science kit ;) ). I am loving getting things I would never ever buy and thinking up ways to use them. Best of all–it’s affordable.

For 15 dollars you can do better selecting much more at your local craft store than the selection you receive from Whimseybox. Having received more than three boxes the disappointment grew greater with each time. It’s a great idea to have a seclection of items to come up with a creation. However, for the price and the ability to perhaps try a new product it was weak and disappointing.

I think for $15 you can do much better at a craft store or even thrifting for supplies. This takes the guess work out yes but sometimes you shake your head and wonder what they were thinking when they sent it out.
March’s 2012 box included
2 sharpies (I got two variations of green)
some cloth trim from Simplicity (mine was brown and zig zag)
scrap booking paper/oragami paper. (12 sheets)
Elmer’s All Purpose Glue Stick
a few small round magnets

I had seen previous boxes and yes I know boxes have off months. But I just was not impressed.

Though I will say I LOVE the box they put it all into. They are made so you can stack them and put labels on them and have a magnetic closure so very useful for holding together small crafty items.

When a friend first linked me to WhimseyBox, I was incredibly excited. She couldn’t sign up since she’s not in the US, but I instantly signed up for the waiting list. Several months later, I got my invitation. I quickly clicked on the link and signed up, eager to get my first box. Found out I’d *just* missed the February box, so my first one would come in March.

When that first box finally arrived, I eagerly opened it, and was suddenly a little disappointed. I could’ve purchased everything in the box myself, and spent less than the $15 per month I was paying. I have since seen on various reviews online that some boxes had more trim than I did (2 or 3 strands as opposed to the 1 I got) or lace, etc. I figured, though, maybe it was just an off month. I’d wait and see what April’s box was like, before deciding whether or not to keep up with the subscription.

The time for April’s box came, and they had new boxes and a new way of shipping them – which required a signature for delivery confirmation. I have issues with my Post Office following the redelivery request instructions (they always do the opposite of what I request when I log on to the USPS website), so it took me a few more days before I could finally get my hands on the new box. I was still excited, even though I was a little apprehensive (due to March) and frustrated (due to Post Office), and eagerly tore into my box as soon as I (finally) got it. While I liked the contents of the April box more than the March one – I still felt it left a LOT to be desired. Once again, I still could’ve bought purchased the items for less on my own – and I wouldn’t have had the hassle of having to sign for the package. (I’d definitely have preferred that extra money being paid for delivery confirmation had gone into the products, instead.)

After receiving the April box, I went ahead and cancelled my subscription. Due to 3 payments having been deducted from my account, I *should* still receive a box for May, but that will be my last. (Unless May just absolutely wows me and makes me resubscribe, which I’m doubting.) Sure – it’s incredibly wonderful to get random products in the mail once a month, especially if they’re items you wouldn’t have bought yourself. However, when you could’ve purchased them yourself AND had money left over, it leads to a definite disappointment – especially when money is tight in this economy. :(

This box has a ton of potential and I really enjoy reading their daily blog. They are a new company and they are definitely working to perfect their product but I really enjoy the service. I would prefer for the boxes to be shipped out earlier in the month. The presentation is spot on, the box reusable and super functionsl, plus you get a free 5×7 art print each month! !June’s box was more of a DIY with some lovely leather and studs to create a wallet. I think that their customer service is excellent, they have responded promptly to all of my emails. For me this box has really reinvigorated my interest in crafting and the anticipation each month is so fun!

Whimseybox continues to impress me. I really enjoy their blog project ideas and each month is a surprise! I can’t wait to see what I get next month! It sound like the boxes have more project-based materials for customers that need more direction which is a great idea. I absolutely recommend for anyone who wants to make something creative at least once a month!

Like others, I thought this sounded like a great idea, because years ago I had belonged to craft clubs and found the mystery aspect to be exciting. Well the mystery with this subscription is how do these people sleep at night considering the way they cheat subscribers. The “box” that everyone thinks is so cool arrived crushed because of the poor way it was shipped. The closure is velcro not magnetic. The contents were cheap and not at all unique, new or inventive. The project was like something a kid would make at summer camp and it I had even tried it I would never wear it nor give it as a gift. My account was charged two months prior to receiving the first shipment so before I got to see one I got charged for the second one before I could get out and cancel my subscription. After cancelling, I received no response that the cancellation went through nor were there any replies to my emails to customer service.

I received the July box on 8/4/12. (signed up/paid on 7/4) I waited awhile to post, because I was afraid my disappointment would get the best of me, and what I had to say would not be very nice.

I signed up for what I thought would be new crafting materials every month. I’m glad I didn’t pay more than $15 for the July box, or I think I would be filing a dispute with my credit card company. That’s a really nice way of saying the bit of chain and floss in the box was not worth $15, and to think the price has gone up to $25 is mind boggling.

I am very disappointed. The silver lining is I seem to be one of the few whose box wasn’t completely smooshed in the shipping envelope, because It will be the only thing I will find a use for. (mine was only partially smooshed)

I went back and re-read the FAQS to make sure I hadn’t misunderstood what Whimseybox was about, and I think a complete re-write is in order. Here is an example from the FAQ: “How do I choose what is in my box?” “Well, you don’t! We use the information you shared in your user profile to select a variety of fun products to inspire you.”

That is not true. Everyone receives the same box. Therefore it cannot be based on user profiles.

Here is another example, that is misleading: “What is Whimseybox?” “Whimseybox is an inexpensive, fun way to get inspired and expand your creative experience. After you subscribe we’ll start sending you a box with 4-5 different craft products to try and enjoy every month.”

That is a stretch of imagination in my opinion. I suppose if you count the two skeins of floss separately, I received 4 products.

All in all I am not only completely disappointed, but rather a bit grouchy about spending $15 on materials that together would cost less than $5 at the local craft supply store.

I wrote the first review, which (obviously) did not go through properly. (Can I review THIS site? LOL)

I have gotten every box since January. My first 2 boxes were great. March was a bust. Others have varied. But, yes–floss, sharpies, a glue stick. The glue stick actually came in handy when my 3rd grader was finishing a school project–but is this a kids’ box? They ship priority mail, but the boxes take a minimum of 4 days to get to me (one took WEEKS). One month featured a big chunk of chain–I am allergic to nickel, and whimseybox couldn’t tell me if the chain had nickel. COULDN’T. And too much crap from Oriental Trading Company.

They have also switched away from the “whimsey” aspect I loved to a project-based box because “people wanted that”. What people? I didn’t/don’t. The squeaky wheel gets the grease, clearly. And they didn’t notify us of this change–they just kept charging. And, basically–I would have LOVED these project boxes when I was 13. Being a grownup, I now much more appreciate the original idea of a whimsical collection of crafty things to do what you will. It’s much harder to be clever when staring at a box of probably-allergic chain and ugly floss colors.

The last 2 boxes have been better. But I don’t know how much longer I will stick it out. I like the concept (or–I like the original concept, which they decided I didn’t like). I appreciate the effort of starting a new business. But I don’t like how they treat their subscribers. And for the last 6 months, every single box has shipped late. Every.Single.One. Lots of excuses, but no communication originates from the whimseybox team.

i was initially excited when i found out about this service, but i have to say i was completely DISAPPOINTED when i received my first box. first the box was late and i was given the excuse they had late shipments come in and weren’t able to get the boxes out on time. then when i got the box after my next payment was already deducted it was full of stuffing and not product…i got 2 tiles (from home depot) mod podge, a sponge brush and a small craft paint in white, mind you they gave me white tiles. really??? that is suppose to inspire me? how? where was the cool project idea? where was the product? what was i suppose to do with that? now i am waiting for my second box, that is late again! i emailed the company to find out the ETA and i can only imagine what excuse i will get this time. i also wonder if they will actually give me a box worth the inspiration. would i recommend to a friend….the answer is NO! sorry not worth the money. whether it be $15 or $25 which ever they decided to charge this month.

I really really wish I would have read more reviews before I ordered a three-month subscription. It was something that sounded perfect for me – I love crafting and finding new types of supplies to use.
I was so disappointed by the Oriental Trading items I got, along with four random Crayola fabric markers and one bottle of ink effects. The value of the items were, at most, half of the $15.00 I paid for the month. I understand there is not a guaranteed value, however I feel it should at least equal what I paid.

I also feel very mislead by their photos they use to advertise the box. Currently the box they show in the photo on their subscription page has three tubes of paint, three Ink Effects, six skeins of floss, and three glassine bags presumably with misc. tiny craft things. Another photo on the same page shows the items spread out on a table along with some washi tape, scissors, and cute little egg crate with embellishments. Obviously the point of advertising is to make the product really pretty and really appealing, but I feel this implies you will get the items shown. I don’t feel other sub boxes (Birchbox, Ipsy) really do that. What you see is usually what you get (or at least the number of items). And again there is usually a certain value even if the boxes do vary, like Birchbox.

So hopefully they will step it up a little and quit padding the photos of the boxes. There isn’t really anything like this one out there, so it would be cool to see some craft companies work with Whimseybox and improve this really cool idea.

I would consider myself a creative person since before people starting stealing great ideas from Pinterest.

I was excited to purchase a Wimsey Box back in December 2012. I saw a clip from YouTube and thought WimseyBox would be great to boost my inner creative demon that has been locked up due to being a full-time student and employee and soon mother-to-be.

I received my WimseyBox with so much excitement, open the box and was enraged with disappointment! My January 2013 box had a paper calendar, DIY stamp that included foamy shapes and an ink pad. I felt robbed! Couldn’t the foamy shapes at least have been funky? They were triangels, squares, etc.

I don’t even care that I wasted money on this, I’m disappointed that the YouTube video made each WimseyBox delivery look like a little jewel was inside and when I opened my box, it was like clearance junk from Micheal’s Craft Store.

I gave the box to a friend, hopefully she’ll re-gift it if she doesn’t use it.

I will never purchase again from WimseyBox.

I feel that the marketing is very misleading. I do love surprises each month and I’m not disappointed often, but I again I was enraged with disappointment when I received my WimseyBox.

I got Whimseybox for my daughter who loves crafts. She got the December box with no issue. January is still MIA, and it’s already the end of February. After countless “We will be shipping soon,” and still nothing, I cancelled. Their excuse was that they were at a conference. I think it’s great they are trying to promote themselves, but not at the expense of the service that they are promoting. I checked their Facebook Page and Twitter, and there are many others who haven’t received January’s or February’s boxes. I cancelled. Good luck to them, but I subscribe to many other subscription boxes, and this has never happened. I subscribed to KellyKits and got the box a week later.

My Whimseybox contained the Velcro box, tissue, ribbon, and brown craft shred plus a tiny white note pad, less than 3 x 5 inches, two rolls of patterned tape-like stuff, two extra small patterned pins, (the kind that you wear to say you voted), less than a hand full of rubber bands, and three small slabs of blonde craft wood. The picture showed a note pad. There was no indicator that this was a welcome box. I filled out the interest survey on their website when I registered my gift subscription. HA!
The website asks for input but the FAQ say you may transfer your subscription, but are otherwise stuck. I am an art teacher and hope that next month they send me a box of cardboard toilet paper rolls… Those are priceless!

Where to start? I subscribed to Whimseybox shortly after they first started. They charged me immediately and didn’t send a box until almost a month later, after they charged me a second time (their response? “the payment is for your next box, which should arrive in the middle of the month” as in two weeks from when I got my original box?). After that I had issues with: damaged boxes, missing boxes (they claim this was my fault, because I am the one that entered my address in the shipping field. I think I know my own address you jerks.), boxes arriving without ENOUGH POSTAGE (yes I had to pay cash to my own mailman to receive a box, I should have refused delivery but did NOT realize the customer service response to this would be “tee hee oops” and no offer to reimburse), and the same woefully inadequate product selection described above. But get this, I continued to subscribe for a WHOLE YEAR. When it was time to cancel, their FAQ pointed me to the “My Account” page on which there was no way to cancel. So I canceled via paypal. Did that work? Nope, they charged me for another month. I emailed them. They said I was probably charged because of a problem from when they switched off of paypal and to their own system (duplicate accounts) and that they would fix it. I received a box (since I paid and I guess they just don’t DO refunds), and the next month they charged me again. I was furious. I sent them an email that was nothing like my previous polite emails and finally got the issue resolved, but not without gettingng one more (crappy) box.

Long story short? You are paying a hefty overage for these women to essentially run their company in a “beta tester” status. They had no way of securing decent craft items before you signed up and absolutely NO idea how to run a subscription service with as few people as they have working for them. If you like the idea of forking over money for no value just so they can run their super hip craft community, go right ahead but do know that they are all paying themselves a living wage while simultaneously flipping the proverbial bird to their subscribers.

I don’t know what everyone is talking about. I subscribed for 3 months, and I started with the August box. It was a good box, but the only thing that may have made it worth $15 was the glue. You could have used a much cheaper glue for the same results. The package was mostly paper filling and I almost threw out one of the supplies because I couldn’t find it in the pile of shredded paper. For “inspiration” they give you instructions for a specific project. That materials they show on their website are not necessarily the colors or patterns you will get (and they don’t tell you this). I cancelled the auto renewal because I didn’t want to get charged for another 3 months before knowing if I like them enough for that. Instead of canceling the repayment schedule, they cancelled my current subscription. Since they had my credit info, they thought they could remedy the situation with one email, and charged me for a 3 month subscription before asking if I wanted to buy it. They told me this wasn’t illegal because I had, at one point, wanted a subscription. They “kindly” offered a refund (quotations because I didn’t even hint at wanting to pay for anything, and they only offered a refund after I told them unauthorized purchases are illegal).

WhimseyBox September 2013 Photo Gallery Review

See full review here:

http://outsideoftheboxreviews.blogspot.com/2013/11/whimseybox-september-2013-photo-gallery.html

This DIY macrame wall hanging or planter holder was right up my alley and either one is super cute too! I would have like to see the materials equal at least the box cost though… It is $4 shy of the box price coming in at $11!! Last month I was impressed because the value was around $24… It looks like they need to find some more partners instead of opening up a store! It looks as if the subscription members may be paying for some of the costs of their online store :(. They could have included some nicer beads or maybe some paint to make them pretty? It was kind of plain, I scoured the internet trying to find a more interesting “something” to make with the materials. The materials they provided were not bad in any way but they need to get the value to the box value. The packaging and branding is fresh, fun and beautiful. :Last month I said” It is rare in crafting boxes to see this kind of value for dollar. Not only did they put together this awesome project and teach you how to do it they also gave you an awesome deal on supplies!!” I definitely cannot say that about this month and unfortunately I do not think that October’s box is any better in regards to value for dollar. I am still glad I picked up this subscription because I am loving it so far. This is my third box, I already have my fourth box (Oct)… and I don’t like it at all… November please be better!! I don’t expect to love every month but I do expect the value of the box to be what I pay (at least!)…. Especially since we are SPOILED :) and most boxes give us a much higher value then what we pay per month.

Whimseybox needs to raise the value of their box back up to where it should be and perhaps add a little more detail to their projects if they want to prosper.

I just received my first box today. I have to say it was packaged really nicely. However, I was disappointed with what I received. This month (April 2014) was a calligraphy box. Having done calligraphy in the past I can say that the supplies they provided were uber cheap. You can purchase an entire set of nice supplies at this cost. Plus, they gave you two nibs, a pen, some traceable stuff, and a PLAIN WHITE PIECE OF CARDSTOCK and that was supposed to encourage and inspire??? I don’t think so! I got a 3 month subscription and I just hope next month will be better. With April being such a cool month with so many ideas that could have come from spring and the holidays around this time, this was cheap and boring!

This is a terrible company. I subscribed in August, still haven’t received my box over a month later. I tried contacting customer service both by phone and email. No response whatsoever. Then they charged me again in September for the next box! I canceled my subscription, am disputing this with my credit card company and filing a complaint with the Better Business Bureau. Really disappointing.

Check out their facebook page to see other customers with similar complaints. Whimseybox is having some issues and is not communicating at all with their customers. They continue to take money from subscriptions even though they aren’t shipping anything. They are not responding to any emails and phone calls to customer service go to voicemail. Avoid this company.
