Not only were there excellent products in the first box, Beauty Box Five has THE most amazing customer service. Working out issues with them is a dream!

I ordered a subscription, got my first box and was kind of disappointed in it.. it did however arrive in a cute Tiffany blue box with products in a reusable mesh bag but I especially did not care for three of the items. 2 face creams from Weleda, day and night cream (which was also in the month prior box) that smell horrible and were soon to expire in a few days and a tanning wipe. The only decent products I recieved in the box was an eye pencil, (1) nail polish remover wipe and a sample of purlisse face cleaner. I cancelled after my first box because I would rather spend my money on a box that gives a better assortment line such as Eco Emi etc….

Man, this review is a bummer to write. For the first time, I am so disappointed in a subscription box that I can’t really think of much of anything good to say about it. I thought about just not reviewing in this case, to keep things positive, but that seems dishonest. So here’s the facts:

I signed up to receive Beauty Box 5 March 19. The website looked promising–$12/month for 4-5 samples of some interesting brands, packaged up in what looked like a cute little blue box.

And then I waited. And finally, on April 18, a full month after I signed up (and paid), I got a shipping notice for my first box. OK, that’s a long wait time, but no big deal. Shipping was oddly fast–the box arrived the next day!

It seemed…small, from the outside packaging. And then I opened it and saw some weird Easter-basket-esque filler and the products in a little organza bag. Not what I expected. Definitely not the gift feeling of the blue box and ribbon shown on the website. Still, better to look at the products before I get too judgmental, right?

This is what’s in the bag:
-a single Waterproof LA Fresh Makeup Remover Wipe (estimated value $9.99 for 20, or $.50)
-a .14 oz sample packet of Pur-Lisse Pur-Protect SPF 30 Daily Moisturizer (estimated value $55 for 1.7 oz, or $4.53)
-a 15 mL sample of Freeman Pink Grapefruit Exfoliating Scrub (estimated value $3.99 for 150 mL, or $.40)
-a single SuperGoop Sunscreen Swipe (estimated value $10 for 10, or $1)
-a mL sample of True Natural Advanced Lift & Firm Serum (estimated value $69 for .5 oz, or $18.67)

Total estimated value: $25.10

There was no enclosed literature introducing me to the products, just a little card directing me to the website.

It would be an understatement to say I was underwhelmed by this box. With the exception of the serum, the sample are all single use, so even though they are technically of a higher value than the $12 price tag, they won’t be particularly useful as testers–most things need to be tested more than once. They’re also ALL skin products, which is neither particularly interesting or diverse. Compared to all of the other sample boxes I’ve received, they seem absolutely chinzy. So much so that, after finding a few other reviews of Beauty Box 5 online that seemed like they had nicer things (including full-sized products), I wondered if a mistake had been made with my box. (These reviews include this one of the March box at Nail Art Couture, this one of the March box at Mes Joies de Vivre, and this one of the February box at Pink Sith.) Surely a company trying to establish itself as competition to the extremely successful Birchbox would not intentionally send out a box such as this? I decided to send an email to customer service expressing my disappointment and see what they had to say.

Customer service got back to me quickly–within about 12 hours. However, the reply I received was very unsatisfactory. The customer service representative presented me with list of product values (some of which were different than those I found on my own), and said:
There is a misconception about beauty boxes in that it’s a way receive free products
– that is not our mission. Our mission is help you find the right products by sampling quality brands that will benefit your skin, your time, and your budget.
My other concerns, about the quality of the products themselves (Freeman? really?), the small sample sizes not being big enough for true testing, and the lack of variety, were ignored.

I replied to the customer service representative and told her about the alternative values of the products I’d found (the difference, to be fair, was only a few dollars). I also reiterated my concern about the small sample sizes and limited variety. For a comparison, I mentioned what I had received in my last Birchbox (Birchbox is a $10/month program, 20% cheaper than Beauty Box 5). I also linked to reviews of several past boxes that were clearly of a much higher value than the one I received, still thinking there might have been a mistake of some sort. S/he replied, in part:
But thank you for doing your own research and finding these differences for us. Your absolutely correct in that we’ve featured higher valued boxes in the past. Additionally, we have also featured lower-valued boxes in the past as well. It really just varies and this is how it will be in the future as well. Some months you may get a $50 box, other months you may get a $20 box. We have never claimed to be a value box (although we do provide it), we focus our mission on providing beauty samples for ladies that are in search of cosmetic products to add to their beauty regimen.
Once again, no response to my complains about getting all skin products, or about the samples being too small to do real testing.

At this point, I saw no point in continuing correspondence, as it was clear there had been no mistake and Beauty Box 5 was standing by the shoddy box I received. I went to cancel my subscription, where I found that I had already been charged for/was committed to the May box, though it won’t ship until May 17. The company charges a full month in advance.

At this point, I’d be hard pressed to say whether I am more disappointed in Beauty Box 5’s box or their customer service. I am honestly floored that they would go to no trouble to make things right for an unsatisfied customer. I wanted to give them every opportunity to change my mind about their service/product, but instead they only made me more certain that they are the worst curated subscription experience I’ve had.

So this is the opposite of a recommendation. I strongly encourage my readers to skip Beauty Box 5 when you are considering curated subscription programs. There are a lot of options at this point, and this one is worth neither your time nor your money.

What I really love about them is they are very natural/organic based service which is exactly what I am looking for!

This is a US based service (our of Texas) but it ships to Canada (YAY!).I have received 4 boxes thus far…3 I loved, 1 not so much…but still no complaints from me :)

So far so good! When beauty boxes first hit the scene, I expected mostly makeup items with a few other beauty-care things thrown in. For the most part, the beauty boxes I’ve tried have had very little makeup. Beauty Box 5 has been refreshing because there’s more makeup than I expected. I signed up for the quarterly option to save a little money. I think BB5 has a long way to go in terms of “the complete package” (ie, quality beauty blog, interactive website, personalized/customized boxes), but I don’t mind waiting around until then!

Box has gone from ok to BAD! Gave them some props last month since they are new and products were ok. This month… Eyelashes that can only be bought wholesale (500) from CHINA! A drugstore foot scrub. The shipping was all messed up and late.
Customer service is a joke. They only answer if you blast them via twitter or Facebook.

I love the products that I have been introduced to every since I started my subscription to Beauty Box 5! Products that I have especially fallen in love with are my exfoliating wipes that I use without water, my grapeseed oil moisturizer, my tree hut hawaii scent shea butter (loooooove at first smell and use), and the fingernail polish remover wipe (it worked better than any other wipe I’ve ever used)! I am so happy that I suscribed to this product. I wouldn’t have known that these great products that I’ve formed a beauty regime around even existed if I hadn’t been given the opportunity to try them. Ordering an item that you like is so easy too, with the card that you get and the links on the website. I really do love love this box and am a loyal customer!!

I subscribe to several different “boxes” and I have to say that this is on the top of my favorites list! I have discovered more fave products from this than anyother box. Shipping is super fast and everything is always packaged nicely. There is always a nice mix of makeup and skincare and they provide enough product to get a good feel for how it is. I find myself cancelling more and more subscriptions but this one is defenitely a keeper!

I have been subscribed to this box for over 2 months now and have not yet received a box. I wrote to customer service almost 2 days ago and have not yet gotten a response. I cannot write a complete review as I have no products to review. I have been snooping on youtube to see what products I should expect and they look wonderful! I am not giving up just yet and hoping that it may just be a glitch.

I was extremely disappointed with Beauty Box 5. I am a bonafide make-up and skincare guru and I know and breathe pretty much every name brand out there…but this box was filled with no-name products. Not only did my box take six weeks to arrive, but none of my products matched my preferences. I would absolutely not subscribe to this box if I were you. Take your money to Birchbox for not only two dollars less, but name brands.

I received two boxes from Beauty Box 5 so far and I loved both of them. So far I received some of my favorite brands like Be a Bombshell and Model Co. There are a few smaller named brands and one or two drugstore brands, but the value in both boxes was great and I am really impressed so far. You can check out one of my reviews, plus pictures of the box here: http://www.subscriptionmaven.com/2013/07/beauty-box-5-review-july-2013-beauty.html

I love subscription boxes and recieve or have recieved most of them- but this one has got to go- the majority of the products look like something you might pick up at a dollar store- generic handy wipes, off brand makeups that seem to be cheap versions “Bombshell” lipsgloss- not a cheap knock off of Buxom glosses- by chance? This box is fine for a no- frills sort of person perhaps who doesnt use luxury brands much, but doesnt begin to compare to the others out there like Birchbox, or IPSY Glambag in the same price range.. and the whole customer service end of the website has been down fgore the past month so its hard to get anything done there- except make a new subscription of course!

By far, Beauty Box 5 is the BEST! They have great customer service when I had to change my address, and the products are always in unique and quality taste. I liked the Beauty Box 5 box that I received in January 2014. Although it was almost a wash on what I paid for the box and what was inside the box I was still pretty pleased. It takes approx. 2 weeks to ship to Canada but they set that expectation when I enrolled. You get a shipping notification that is trackable. The shipping is free to Canada which is rare for most sub boxes especially the ones that come from the US. I have spoken and written to customer service and had really great response thus far…

BB5 another great monthly box that does makeup. This one does do sample sized items and throws in some mini full-sized item. This one was much better over the last BB5 box I reviewed in the past. This one had a few items I could use more than 5 times, now that is rocking the sample sized items right there. This came with oil free wipes for the face, tooth-brush holder, LA Fresh wipes, Model co (lip liner), and some mineral makeup. With that said these were items I could totally use and fun trying out. The oil free wipes are great, living in a state with constant moisture sure does a number on the face. This box is also cool, because as it travels it tells the world what it is, and getting monthly boxes like that, almost just makes you want to keep it! Great monthly box, and they throw in many sampled items to make up for being sample sized products, and who doesn’t love trying out things before you buy it right!! http://www.tiffanyreviews.com/2013/05/07/beauty-box-5-review/

Beauty Box 5 Review – April 2014
Full review: http://imnotsoho.com/?page_id=2176

I received my Beauty Box 5 shipping notification on April 08 on April 17th my box arrived.
Cost: $12/month (or $10/month with 3-month subscription; $8.25/month with 12-month subscription). Shipping to Canada is free which makes this one of the most affordable boxes out there.

Currently, until April 30 (or while supplies last), Beauty Box 5 has a promotion for a Free Bellapierre Shimmer Powder ($14.99 value) with any quarter or yearly subscription.

April’s Beauty Box 5 theme is Shades of Beauty.

Nicka K New York – Hydro Lipstick in Begonia (Full-Size) Retail Value $4.99: This brand is new to me but the lipstick feels nice on and I like the deep berry with a touch of copper color.

Bonne Bell – Lip DeFiner (Full-Size) Retail Value $3.95: I do love a pink lip liner!

Blum Naturals – All Purpose Cleansing Wipes (30 wipes) Retail Value $2.49: This cute little container houses 30 wipes and I can never have enough of these.

BH Cosmetics – California Collection Eyeshadow Palette Retail Value $2.84: These shadows are a small sample of each of the collections that are available (Hollywood, San Francisco & Malibu). The full-size palettes have 16 eyeshadows and 4 face powders.

Jergens – Natural Glow 3 Days to Glow Moisturizer (0.84 oz) Retail Value $2: I wouldn’t mind trying this moisturizing tanner but the sample I received is for medium to tan skin tones and I am so far away (fair to light), maybe they will work for one of my friends.

Total Retail Value: Approx. $16. This wasn’t my favorite Beauty Box 5 box but I do really like the cleansing wipes and I will use of the lipstick and liner. As for the shadow and the self tanner I think I will make one of my friends very happy when I gift these to them. This was the first box where there was a high content of cosmetics. I actually prefer when BB5 has more beauty products and tools than makeup.

Considering the lower than average cost, I found the Beauty Box 5 to be among the best of the monthly subscription boxes I’ve seen. I liked the selection and quality of products. My box contained the following items:

* Single-use samples of Organix Coconut Water Shampoo and Conditioner, which retail for $7.99 for full size products
* Glam Natural Mascara, 0.25 oz, retails for $28.00
* Eslor Introductory Collection Calming Kit single-use sample packets of Soothing Refiner & Cleanser, Replenishing Scrub, Comforting Mask and Soothing Cream, priced at $28 to $65 for full size versions
*Vitabath body wash small sample bottle, which costs $7.95 for a 12-oz bottle
